Brent Mydland was an American singer, songwriter, and keyboardist best known for his work with the band the Grateful Dead. He was born on October 21, 1952, in Munich, Germany, as the son of a US Army chaplain.
Mydland joined the Grateful Dead in 1979, after working with various other bands and musicians. He quickly became an integral part of the band's sound, contributing vocals and playing multiple keyboards, including the Hammond B-3 organ, clavinet, and piano.
Mydland's time with the Grateful Dead was marked by a creative surge, with his songwriting contributions adding a unique, soulful element to the band's repertoire. Some of his most well-known songs include "Just a Little Light," "Blow Away," and "Tons of Steel."
Tragically, Brent Mydland passed away on July 26, 1990, due to an accidental drug overdose at the age of 37. Despite his untimely death, his legacy lives on through his music and contributions to the Grateful Dead's rich musical history.
